Monaco
Visit Monte Carlo where mountains, sea and highrise apartments form a ring around the Grimaldi royal family palace and see the principality’s famous Casino where fortunes are made and lost in the private salons.
Take tea at the Café de Paris where the great Escoffier supposedly invented the crepe suzette by accidentally setting fire to a desert made for Edward V11’s mistress.

Nice
Absorb the atmospheric street life around the flower market in the old quarter and try the snacks at ‘Terre des Truffes’ where every dish is made from truffles. In July, the Jardins de Cimiez host the Nice Jazz Festival with 12 days of performances by international music stars in the ancient Roman amphitheatre.

Ski Resorts
The skiing season runs from December to the end of March. A particularly magical time to visit is Christmas : Santa visits on a horse-drawn sleigh and at midnight on New Year’s Eve, hot chocolate and champagne are served on the piste to the light of flaming torches held by skiers descending the slopes.
The French Alps ski resorts of Isola 2000 and Auron are at the entrance to the Mercantour National Park. You can easily drive up for a morning on the slopes and be back at the villa for lunch. The season runs from December to the end of March. Both resorts have plenty of après-ski entertainment and visitors can hire all equipment, skis, snowboards and snowkarts.
Purpose-built Isola 2000 has 120 km of pistes (4 black, 14 red, 20 blue, 7 green) and ample ski lifts : one rarely has to queue. Auron, at 1600m, has 132 km of pistes and is a typical Alpine ski resort with a 12th Century church.
The ‘Ecole de Ski Francais’ with more than 100 instructors, runs classes in English and French throughout the season for beginners and the more expert : prices start at 35 Euros for an individual lesson and 18 Euros in a group.
